SES Playground Project

SES Playground project

Please see below for an update on our efforts to build a new play structure at SES.

For those who are not aware, the students in grades 1-6 at Salisbury Elementary School do not have a play structure on campus. The play structure that was enjoyed by previous generations of SES students was deemed unsafe during the 2023-2024 school year and as a result, it was removed. A dedicated group of parents, teachers, and community members are working in collaboration with the school, district, and SES PTA on exploring the possibility of building a new play structure on campus. Our Why: Limited Options for Students

How did the SES Playground Project Committee determine it was time to pursue a new structure?

We have (1) Gaga Pit available, typically used by 10 students at a time.

We have (1) mini basketball hoop available, typically used by about 5-7 students at a time.

We have (2) foursquare courts that are painted onto the pavement, typically used by 4-8 students at a time.

We have (1) baseball diamond, often used for kickball.

A large vernal pool is fenced in on the edge of our playground space.

The play structure was deemed unsafe and removed, further limiting play options.

Selecting a Site

How did the SES Playground Project Committee determine the new site?

Working with the Salisbury Conservation Commission, the Triton Regional School District, the SES PTA, and school staff, the SES Playground Project Committee identified a potential site for a new play structure. The site identified preserves current options while maximizing the space for a new play structure. The site identified is a triangular portion of the back field behind the yellow line drawn on this aerial view of our school/.

Surveying Our Students

How did the SES Playground Project Committee incorporate student feedback?

To ensure that our project reflects the interests and wishes of our students, during the 2024-2025 school year all SES students were given the opportunity to provide feedback and vote for their favorite playground structures. Their feedback was then provided to designers at (3) vendor companies to generate initial designs.

Voting on a Design

How did the SES Playground Project Committee select an initial design?

After the (3) initial designs were generated, the SES Playground Project Committee hosted presentations from representatives at the three vendor companies. Considering cost, design, vendor support, and after sending questions to the representatives, the SES Playground Project Committee voted to pursue an initial design. These images were shared with students in May of 2025 to show them how their feedback was incorporated into a potential design.

Photo-Realistic Renderings

SES parent Rick Knight created photo-realistic renderings of the initial playground design. In collaboration with UltiPlay, the playground vendor, the following images were generated:
